One of the contributing factors to the poverty cycle is the disproportionate impact of the legal system. The Legal Services Corporation 2022 Justice Gap Study found that 74% of low-income households experienced one or more civil legal problems in the past year, while 39% experienced five or more compounding civil legal problems.

For the first time since its formation in 2018, the Alliance of Ohio Legal Aids has established a staff person to support the Alliance’s ability to collaborate strategically, align advocacy efforts, and develop a statewide voice for legal aid programs and the people they serve.

George Johnson had paid all his fines, but having a minor misdemeanor drug conviction on his record was a barrier to employment even years later. Legal Aid helped Mr. Johnson file for an expungement. The judge granted the expungement and alleviated Mr. Johnson's frustration at not being able to compete in the job market. Now he is able to seek employment free of any shadows from his past.
